Point Of View
Artist Statement:
A form appears on a sandstone wall as light is painted onto the honey-hued rock. Rich, fluid colours appear from the darkness, revealing an artist at work, as seen through the canvas. As distinct features emerge out of these flowing brushstokes, contours resolve into striking portraits. As the first light installation to be projected on the facade of 47 George Street, this Esem Projects’ collaboration captures local artist Brad Robson in the process of creating his vivid, dynamic portraits. His style is bold and gestural. These colourful, painterly works reveal significant figures from Sydney’s past – some well-known, others who should be more recognised. Each face is rendered both unique and ethereal, their impressions on this Sydney landscape transitory, always in motion. The installation takes the concept of mural painting and celebrates the process as much as the finished work. Point of View reveals both the medium and the act of painting as a dynamic, visceral experience of creative dialogue between artist and onlooker. Multiple viewpoints converge – between artist, subject, and audience – on both sides of a virtual canvas.
